Finding A Deity
Choosing a deity can be the hardest part, because often we think we choose them, but in reality, they choose us. Although I initially called upon Macha, why did I receive that particular ritual? Why didn’t I resonate with the other three gods? She appeared to me and chose me to be her agent, her priest in this world. If you are looking for a patron goddess or god, I suggest studying a mythology, to learn a bit more about the gods. A great friend asked me why we should study mythology. If the god picks us, then isn’t it more “real” if we have no prior information about it. I understand the sentiment and often wanted “proof” that my experiences were real. I’ve seen quite a few people meet the pagan gods and goddesses in meditation, with little prior knowledge of mythology, but usually that requires a certain degree of psychic ability and clarity to perceive the image, name and message. Learning the myths creates a touchstone, to connect better with the gods. My first teacher said that if you don’t respect the gods enough to learn about whom you are calling on, why should they answer you? The knowledge forms a bridge. Speaking the name, silently or out loud, creates an energetic connection.
Once you have some familiarity with a mythic culture or two, do not consciously choose a deity, but ask the Universe, the Great Spirit, to guide you to the deity that is correct for you now. Certain gods and goddesses will weave in and out of your life, and change as you change and evolve, but often one or more will be life long companions. Think about what gods and goddesses you resonated with, who are in alignment with your personality and talents.
Also think about the ones you have a strong fear or dislike of. Sometimes the ones we like least can be the most helpful. Be open to whatever signs come your way. You might have a dream or meditation that makes your deity clear. You might also have a conversation, see a television show or pick up a book and the name will come up. Sometimes you simply wake up and know which is correct for you.
